More Work Abroad Opportunities

Students may combine their desire for service with the adventure of living and working in another country, thanks to a number of special summer programs.  These programs offered in such countries as Ghana, Belize, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Fiji usually require hard work for two to three weeks followed by one or two weeks of in-country travel.  Living conditions, often with host country families, may be austere – think outhouses, bugs, and limited sleeping conditions. The work is unpaid, and participants may have to pay $4,000 to $6,000 to cover their own expenses.  The upside is that the project may help meet school or state requirements for community service, and it provides a rich cultural experience.
